Our colleagues from Siemens Gamesa Turkey have released an interesting and insightful article that has been released at Transformers Magazine. This publication focuses on the transformers industry and its market as well as in green and smart grid solutions. “Overcoming hurdles: Challenges in testing and validating wind turbine transformers with electronic tap changers” is the name of Siemens Gamesa Turkey’s article, which highlight FasTaP project’s work with wind turbines.
Specifically, the article details some of the necessary changes and adaptations that manufacturers must implement to continue to be compliant with grid codes. These technical requirements have become more demanding, in an environment where renewable energy sources are exponentially growing in terms of penetration.
As you know, FasTaP project is centred on developing a technology for “fast tap” change, and especially on the development of Dry-Type Transformers (DTT) and Oil-Immersed Transformers (OIT) with Electronic Tap Changers. The goal is to enhance Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) capabilities as well as to comply with the mentioned grid codes requirements.
Besides the requirements for a system operation, now being increasingly placed on new power plants, another challenge for WTG manufacturers is grid weakness. The problem is that the electrical paradigm moves forward, and grids are not advancing at the necessary rapid pace. “This imposes limitations on the placement of WTGs within the grid infrastructure. Grid fragility or short-circuit ratios at wind farm (WF) connection points, imposes substantial constraints on developers”, Uğur Yayan (Electrical Team Leader at Siemens Gamesa) and Osman Yılmaz (Power System Engineer at Siemens Gamesa) say.
More challenges and feasible solutions are explained in detail in the article at Transformers Magazine, that you can read here [CR1] by registering at Transformers Magazine website.
